Tis the season for travel. Whether you’re heading out to see family or escaping the cold in Mexico, getting away from it all is a great way to end the year. But, while travel is a great experience, it can disrupt your daily routines, including your important oral care.

And there’s nothing like a cavity to ruin a trip!

Maintaining your oral health while on the go is essential to avoid dental issues like cavities and keep your smile at full brightness until you return. With a little preparation and consistency, you can keep your smile bright and healthy no matter where you are.

Christmas travelling

#1 Pack Smart

Start your preparation with a travel-friendly oral care kit. Make sure to Include a toothbrush (preferably a travel-sized or foldable one), fluoride toothpaste, floss, and a small bottle of antibacterial mouthwash. You may also want to consider adding a collapsible cup for rinsing your mouth after impromptu meals. If you’re flying, make sure liquids adhere to airline regulations.

#2 Stick to Your Routine

Even if your day is packed with family, or soaking up the sun, make sure to prioritize brushing and flossing at least twice a day. For best results, use a timer or a two-minute song to ensure thorough cleaning. But, if you’re unable to brush after a meal, rinsing your mouth with water can help remove food particles and bacteria until you can.

#3 Stay Hydrated

Flying the friendly skies and laying on beaches often leads to dehydration. This can contribute to dry mouth which increases the risk of cavities. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist and rinse away bacteria. But, not all drinks are made equal. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks that can fuel plaque buildup.

#4 Be Prepared for the Unexpected

Accidents happen, and dental problems can arise when you least expect them. So, before you go, make sure you have coverage for dental mishaps. But beyond that, it’s helpful to carry a small dental first aid kit, including pain relievers, orthodontic wax, and dental picks. And make sure you know how to locate a dentist in your destination in case of emergencies.

#5 Don’t Skip Dental Checkups

If you’re planning an extended trip, schedule a dental checkup before you leave to ensure your teeth and gums are in good shape. This way you’ll know you and your teeth a ready to smile through to the new year.
