If getting your kids to brush feels like a nightly negotiation, you’re not alone. The good news is a little creativity can turn a chore into a routine they actually enjoy. That leads to habits which will protect their smiles for life.
If your’e ready to make that change, here are a few ideas to try at your house.
Make two minutes fly by
Kids should brush twice a day for two minutes, but two minutes can feel like forever when you’re 5. Pick a favourite song that runs about two minutes and challenge your child to keep brushing until it ends. Humming works too (and makes less mess than singing).
You can also split the mouth into four zones and switch every 30 seconds. Add a silly twist at each switch, like standing on one foot or brushing in tiny circles.
Let them take the lead

Kids love being the expert. Have your child brush a stuffed animal’s teeth, or swap roles and let them play dentist while you brush. Brushing side by side helps too, since little ones learn by copying what they see.
Make clean teeth easy to see
A sticker chart gives kids a simple way to track their progress. For older kids, try chewable plaque-disclosing tablets, sold at most drugstores. They temporarily colour leftover plaque so your child can see exactly which spots need another pass. Letting them pick their own toothbrush colour builds a sense of ownership, too.
Keep a grown-up on the team
Most children need help brushing until about age 8. The Canadian Dental Association suggests kids are ready to brush well on their own once they can write (not print) their name. Until then, brush with them or check their work. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for kids aged 3 to 6, and teach them to spit it out rather than swallow it. For children under 3, ask your dental team whether fluoride toothpaste is right for them.
Even great brushers miss a spot now and then. Regular dental hygiene visits clear away the plaque and tartar a toothbrush can’t reach, and your hygienist can point out the areas your child should give extra attention. Together, fun at home and care in the chair add up to a lifetime of healthy smiles.
